Urushi Kawari-nuri" refers to a Japanese lacquer technique used to create intricate and visually stunning designs on various objects, including fountain pens. Kawari-nuri translates to "variegated lacquer" in English, and it involves applying layers of colored lacquer to create patterns or images with depth and complexity. Urushi is the traditional Japanese lacquer material derived from the sap of the Urushi tree.

Urushi Kawari-nuri is a labor-intensive process that requires skilled artisans. The artist carefully applies multiple layers of colored lacquers onto the pen's surface, allowing each layer to dry before applying the next. This technique creates depth and visual interest in the final design. Kawari Nuri is applied to the Nikko Ebonite pen which provides a suitable base for the application. 

Urushi lacquer is known for its durability and the ability to develop a rich patina over time. The lacquer not only enhances the pen's appearance but also protects it from wear and tear.
